SUNDAY WAS PURE TRAIL (and TRASH) FAIRY MAGIC + Event photos are IN! 🧚🏼‍♀️📸

Over 115 volunteers showed up — from every corner of our community. We didn’t just clean up the mountain, we helped protect our drinking water, trails, and our roadways.

And WOW… did we WORK. The official weight of trash removed = 4,120 lbs — over TWO TONS! 🤯

🗑️What did we find?

Sinks. Tires. Toilets. An urn. Clothing. Toys. Car engine and parts. Concrete and rebar. Construction debris. Carpets. Fire extinguishers. Wooden pallets. Metal scraps. Hygiene items. Doggie poop-filled bags. Cabinets. Pillows. Wrappers. Beer & soda cans. Plastic + glass bottles. An abundance of Fireball. Umbrellas.

And a firearm discovery that turned part of our route into an active crime scene.

🌲It’s a shame we have to do this year after year. That people treat this place like a dumping ground. But because of that lack of care… we care even harder. And we show up.

🫶We are beyond grateful for the turnout, the energy, and the JOY.

🌟 Sisterhood Spark – What inspired you to join She Shreds Shed?
I’m all about getting more women riding. I was a coach with Dirt Side Sisters and “First Time”/Beginner riders were my jam. Seeing someone’s face light up with an “Ah-Ha” moment is the best feeling ever. Bottom line, I miss the sisterhood since DSS closed its doors. I learned so much, and want to share the stoke with others. Currently I ride with the Velo Cafe Ladies MTB group, and thought that She Shreds Shed would be a great way for ladies looking for a chill non-threatening group to find us!

💪 Shed Strength – What encouraging tip do you have for other women riders?
Find your tribe. I struggled with anxiety and panic attacks on the trail for several years. I always felt like I was holding people back or couldn’t keep up. I met a friend who helped to pull me out of that mindset. Because of that I found great people who I love riding with, and my confidence has skyrocketed. I’m faster than some, and slower than others, but we all ride together and share the stoke.

Learn some stuff about your bike. Maintaining your bike is pretty easy, and something we should all know the basics of. Your bike will keep you safe, so keep it in good working order. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or how to do something.

If someone tells you to “just send it”... RUN. I find women riders need to know the “why” and the “how” to learn new skills. Don’t be afraid to walk things you aren’t comfortable riding. Live to ride another day!

Be kind to each other.

🚵‍ What sparked your love for mountain biking? I started riding road with a friend, and he convinced me to dip my toe into mountain biking. It took me a few years to TRULY find my love for it. Sure it was fun, and cool and great to be out in nature... but once I found my tribe, learned some stuff about my bike, didn’t just send it and kept safe, and learned that kindness is the best thing to share... that’s when I started to love to ride.

Does it hurt that I’m riding better than ever? Eh... that’s a nice bonus.

What inspired me to join She Shreds Shed, beyond Alex inviting me, was the opportunity to be part of a community of like-minded women who love riding together. Mountain biking and cycling in general is still a very male-dominated sport, and it can feel intimidating riding with groups of men, especially if you feel like your skills aren’t quite there yet or that you might be judged. With this group, I know that pressure doesn’t exist. It feels supportive, welcoming, and empowering, and that kind of environment makes all the difference.

💪 Shed Strength – What encouraging tip do you have for other women riders?
If you’re struggling with a skill, my biggest tip is to just go out and practice, do drills, take your time, and don’t be afraid to stop. If there’s a feature you want to work on, go back and ride it again. Repetition is how you build confidence. I always find myself returning to the basics when I’m trying to improve, and that foundation is what helps everything else click. Progress doesn’t come from rushing, it comes from patience and practice.

🚵‍♀️What sparked your love for mountain biking?
Mountain biking is actually how I got back into cycling as an adult. Around age 21, I bought my first “adult” bike, an old Trek 4300 that was orange and blue and weighed about 40 pounds, and I absolutely loved it. From there, I explored other types of riding like road, gravel, and cyclocross, and for a while those became my main focus. Joining this group feels like it’s going to reignite my love for mountain biking. I also prefer riding trails in a group for safety, if you get hurt in the woods, it’s reassuring to know you’re not alone and can get help getting out.

When I was a kid, my parents would take my siblings and I to the C&O Canal for bike adventures, and that’s really where my love for riding began. Over the years, it grew into something deeper and became a kind of therapy for me. There’s nothing like being on two wheels surrounded by nature. It brings me a sense of peace while still pushing me physically, which feels like the perfect balance. It’s truly a win for both my mind and my body.

Trash RECON (and poop PSA) is in full swing every weekend leading up to the April 12 Cleanup!

We’re finding lots of litter and debris on most routes — and a few that are surprisingly clean (which we love). Those cleaner routes are being adjusted so we can shift teams to the trashier zones 🗑️🤘

Today’s RECON also uncovered a new hotspot, which is now being added 🙌

However, today also forces us to share a trail PSA:
Animal poop? Cool.
Human poop directly off the trail? Not cool. And SUPER not cool to litter your skiddy-marked TP 😡💩🧻

If you go in the woods:
• Dig a hole and bury it
• Do NOT poop DIRECTLY off trail
• Pack out your TP

Nobody wants to dodge human landmines or see TP flowers on the trail.

My face may look happy in the photo — but that’s because of today’s company. The crappy booty situation and zero respect for the trail? Disgusting.

I wanted to get together with like minded women who share a love for dirt and trails and woods. There’s not a lot women’s groups, and so I just jumped at the chance to be apart of this experience to learn new things!

Get out there and do it. Nothing is promised, so you gotta let go of the fear that holds you back. Everyone was or is(myself included) a beginner at some point. If not now, when??? Live your life with no regrets🩵🩵

My Dad got me on the trails. He was super into it, legendary. He gave me a bike and brought me to @ocnp_trail, and there it was born. There’s nothing like being on a trail. You have no room to think about anything else, your mind is still, your heart is pumping, and the dirt is therapy. It’s just you and the trail. And sometimes you get lucky to be able to ride with good company!!

🌟 Sisterhood Spark – What inspired you to join She Shreds Shed?
I’ve ridden at the Shed several times a few years back that were led by (MORE) women, but then they stopped. ☹ I enjoyed trying new challenges during rides, so this new group sounds like a great re-birth!

💪 Shed Strength – What encouraging tip do you have for other women riders?
Have *confidence* in yourself (within your current ability)! What better atmosphere to try things with so many others supporting, guiding, and encouraging you? Conquering a feature or finishing a difficult ride feels great! Don’t worry about “style points”.

🚵‍ What sparked your love for mountain biking?
After 20+ years of road competition, it was GREAT to get into the woods again…off the road and on my own terms. The change of pace that I needed. But, around COVID time, I started experiencing anxiety with my riding ability! It really freaked me out. I started teaching ‘Intro to Mountain Biking’ for @rei experiences, so I HAD to get it together! I got my PIMBIA certification, and @downhillary helped me regain my skills. SO, now I’m back, trying to re-build.
